Archive for September 2026If the Shoe Fits (Brake Shoe Replacement [Rear])Posted September 27, 2026 1:37 PMWhen it comes to brakes on your vehicle, we all know how important it is to keep them working well because they are vital safety equipment. After all, if you can’t slow down and stop, you can’t drive safely. While many vehicles use what are called disc brakes, there’s another type of brakes that are used on the rear wheels of vehicles that have something called drum brakes. Drum brakes were the original type that were invented in the early twentieth century. The term drum comes from the part of the brakes that is a housing connected to your wheel. Inside there are parts called brake shoes that press against the drum when you step on the pedal, and the friction slows and stops your vehicle. Signs your brake shoes might need replacing are your rear brakes make noise when you step on the pedal and they vibrate when you brake. Another sign of bad brake shoes is that your hand brake stops working. If you notice one or both problems in your vehicle, it’s time to bring it in so a technician can inspect your brake system. It can be unsafe to drive a vehicle with worn out brake shoes. There are two brake shoes in each brake, and since they both work each time you stop, when they need replacing, they should be done in pairs. When we replace your brake shoes, we will also inspect other components and parts of your brake system, including your emergency brake cable. We will also lubricate another part called the backing plate. Let us keep your brakes operating as they were designed to. When it comes to safe driving, stopping is as important as going. Ken's Auto Center Something to Latch On To (Hood Latch Safety)Posted September 20, 2026 1:24 PMThe other day, a driver was trying to open his vehicle's hood so he could add some windshield washer fluid. But when he pulled the hood release inside the car, nothing happened. Usually, opening any hood is a 2-step process. You pull the hood release (which is usually a handle under the dashboard to the left of the steering column) and listen for the hood to pop up slightly. (It doesn't open all the way because it has a safety latch to prevent you from accidentally opening it up while you're driving.) Then, you get out and find the latch, usually through the grille near the hood. There's a little handle on it which you push, slide or pull (there are a few different types) at which point the hood can be opened up all the way. But in this driver's case, the hood would not release at all when he pulled the handle inside. Not knowing what to do, he called his service advisor, who told him to bring it over. The reason? A hood with a broken latch could be a safety hazard since it is possible it's not securely closed. And in this condition, it's possible for the hood to suddenly release while you are driving, obscuring your view of the road. Latch issues can be caused by many things, perhaps a broken cable between the hood release and the latch. It's possible that cable just detached or frayed after being opened so many times. If a hood release cable isn't kept lubricated, it can corrode and just lock up. In this driver's case, the cable had corroded and broken, so it had to be replaced. Unfortunately, many times you won't know you have a problem with your hood latch until one time you pull it and it breaks without warning. When your vehicle is in for routine maintenance like an oil change, a technician will often keep an eye out for signs that your hood latch needs attention so you don't get "locked" out of your engine compartment. Ken's Auto Center Brake Service at Ken's Auto Center in San DiegoPosted September 13, 2026 1:13 PMBrakes really aren't optional equipment for San Diego drivers' vehicles. And taking care of them isn't optional either.
There are two types of brakes: disc and drum. Disc brakes have a rotor that's attached to the axle. Calipers straddle the rotor, kind of like the brakes on a bicycle. Drum brakes are more common on back wheels. Pads, called shoes, push against the inside of the drum to slow the vehicle. Be sure to properly maintain your brakes because it's a lot cheaper than paying your nearest San Diego area body shop after an accident. Ken's Auto Center Clean Slate (Protecting Vehicle's Finish)Posted September 6, 2026 1:12 PMWinter is one of the hardest times to keep your vehicle clean. But did you know neglecting to wash your vehicle in winter could cost you a significant amount of money in the long run? Here's why. Many areas deal with snow and ice in the winter, and the salt and sand that are used to keep the road surfaces from being slick are also super corrosive to a vehicle's metal body and undercarriage. That includes all the parts underneath that can be splashed with brine, saltwater and other road debris. Winter is also tough on vehicles where there isn’t snow, sometimes from ocean salt or winter's extra humidity and rain. If you have any breaks in your vehicle's paint, whether it be from a little fender bender or a stone chip, that corrosive winter moisture can get through those cracks and start eating away at the metal underneath. If you can, you should get any dents or damage fixed as soon as possible so your vehicle has a protective layer of paint between road chemicals and the metal. You may want to wait until the warmer weather, but while you're waiting, the damage is getting worse. If you're not sure of a reputable body repair shop, check with the service advisor where you have mechanical work done. They're usually knowledgeable about who is good and not so good. You also may be tempted to skip the car wash during the winter since your vehicle is just going to get dirty fast anyway. You may want to reconsider. Many winter road treatments now use brine that gets in every nook and cranny of your vehicle. It's wise to clean that off regularly during the winter, and many washing facilities include a spray underneath that gets rid of that salt. Your vehicle repair facility may even have its own car wash, a nice bonus when you take your vehicle in for repair or regular maintenance. Ken's Auto Center | ||
